Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge Technology in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay system

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in utilizing replay systems.

Replay technology are set to arrive at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Athletes are granted the ability to contest particular calls from the official, mirroring the system already in use at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

The new system is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This step comes just a year after the All England Club rolled out electronic line calling, which brought an end to the centuries-old role of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors cannot to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the official to review specific situations, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance end of a point.

Importantly, there will be no limit on the number of challenges a competitor can initiate.

Practical Application

An illustrative case took place in Indian Wells recently, where a top player initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the umpire, but believed his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and ruled the player was guilty of interference, granting the point to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

This technology aren't exclusive to major tournaments. The system has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have video reviews in place at all of its events.

Other Changes

A further change at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where spectators have sometimes been unsure if a ball was out or in.

In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
