The Iconic Game Celebrates 20 Years – The Plastic Guitar That United Generations Among Rock Generations

Marking two decades after the legendary game first launched across the Atlantic, providing everyday gamers the opportunity to feel like rock legends. Not in reality, but try telling that anyone who has nailed Free Bird’s lengthy instrumental break before an enthusiastic living-room audience.

Created by the developers, the game gave players a plastic guitar peripheral to follow coloured notes scrolling down the screen synchronized to the music. Each riff mimicked specific notes, creating the sensation of an authentic live show.

The studio previously experimented with rhythm games prior to teaming up with the publisher, which was purchased by the gaming giant during the mid-2000s. Together, they laid the foundations for an unlikely massively profitable franchise that had a significant impact for many musicians included, introducing decades-old groups to millions of gaming enthusiasts.

A former executive, former COO from the developer, recalls the early financial challenges in securing the songs – even though the first two games primarily featured cover versions.

“We reproduced all the music since the dollar figure was so high,” he says. “Even with the publishing rights by themselves, it was extremely difficult. We failed to secure acts such as the Who – RedOctane had virtually no money, and we were fairly certain the project would flop. However, when the game took off, and record sales and radio play were going up, all artists desired to be in.”

He continues: “One of the remarkable aspects was how many parents reached out expressing gratitude for exposing their kids to the songs they adored. It became a multigenerational phenomenon.”

Timeless Music Gains Younger Fans

Northern Irish blues-rock band one featured act included Never Too Late on the 2008 game Guitar Hero World Tour. Lead musician the artist remembers the way the game brought classic rock back into vogue: “Guitar Hero offered a bigger, new demographic. Generally such music was seen as outdated material, however once it got featured on the game young people were finding it, suddenly it became trendy. This validated the genre, eliminating the outdated label. It gave all our music a new life.”

At that time, the band's debut album was still unreleased stateside, meaning the game served as a primary platform for exposure for the group as they went on US tour opening for the rock giants. “The roadies had on Never Too Late on the tour bus, and some of them recognized us from Guitar Hero,” he notes.

Major Band Spin-offs Enduring Influence

Music's heavyweight names soon capitalised on the series’ popularity, with Aerosmith, Metallica and others featuring in specialized game editions that focused on each band’s catalogue and related stories, imagery and rock’n’roll mythology. For example, the Aerosmith edition, it was said to have made the group greater revenue compared to their records. It sold well over half a million copies upon release, while demand for their songs rose significantly at a time as the industry faced decline.

Guitar Hero continues to inspire quick-handed fanaticism among its fans. Recently, an online personality achieved a remarkable feat featuring the challenging track – an infamously tough anthem popularized through the game – using a fan-made version, a no-cost alternative with similar mechanics and extensive customisation options. This track is challenging even in the hardest setting, not to mention performed at increased tempo while hitting every one of its near 4,000 notes. They claimed requiring nine months of practice.

“The game offers a, fantasy thing. Just as with other games, it doesn't imply you ought to use a real gun and go to war,” says DragonForce guitarist Herman Li.

The band previously completed a successful tour before their hit was featured in the third game, but Li says it turned them into widely recognized. “I remember our distributors calling to tell me that we were selling albums like crazy,” he says. “It exploded on the subsequent tour, and we were playing right ahead of the headliners at the event.”

In fact, DragonForce’s exposure from Guitar Hero proved so vast that it has risked overshadow everything else accomplishments. Recently, the song featured in a trailer for a major film. “In the past I thought differently, but now I accept it,” he admits. “If you only listen to one DragonForce song, that's fine – everyone’s got a unique musical journey and I'm pleased we’ve been part of people’s lives”.

Enduring Impact from the Plastic Guitar

The best promotion, whether it’s for automobiles, clothes or games, goes further mere transactions – it inspires a desire. Did Guitar Hero tap into that? “That’s exactly what our team aiming to achieve,” Dornbrook says. “The excitement of performing as a rock star on the stage. From day one, the creators felt that humans have a natural urge to create songs, and their goal was to leverage innovation to enable everyone to do it”.

Most installments were released in just a half-decade between 2005 and 2010, including spin-offs such as the DJ version, complete with a spinning deck, and the band-focused game. Subsequently, corporate focus on peripherals waned, except for a brief comeback in 2015.

Titles like Clone Hero and Fortnite Festival have maintained the scene alive, and there’s set to be a new product from the original publisher in development. Recently formed developers has begun work on its debut rhythm-based title. The initial creators are participating as special advisers. Are gamers ready to embrace a new entry in the spirit of the classic?

“Our team believed such titles could be like Madden where you can releases,” he remarks. “With abundant new music that it could be perennially popular, thus I remain hopeful. It's entirely possible for it to persist for future fans.”
